Gabriel McNutt Obituary – A tragic incident occurred during Father’s Day weekend for a family from Decatur. At a family gathering, their 15-year-old son was shot and killed by an Athens Police officer. However, the parents of the teenager believe that there is more to the story.
Adam McNutt, the father of 15-year-old Gabriel McNutt, expressed, “We want the community to understand that what transpired on Saturday was not representative of our sweet Gabriel.” McNutt revealed that his son Gabriel had been dealing with various medical conditions and neurological damage, which influenced his actions.
While McNutt is still trying to process everything, he mentioned, “Our son is no longer suffering.”
Gabriel McNutt, who was 15 years old, was the eldest child of Adam and Leslie McNutt. Leslie, his mother, expressed her shock at what occurred on Saturday, stating, “I was completely taken aback and couldn’t believe that it escalated to that point.”
The family shared that Gabriel had faced numerous challenges in his short life of 15 years. When he was just a few months old, he was hospitalized after accidentally swallowing a button battery. In response, his family created a Facebook page to raise awareness about the dangers of button batteries and to share his story. Their story was even featured on an Animal Planet segment.
Shortly after Gabriel turned four, he underwent brain surgery due to an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). His family considered it a miracle that he survived and made a recovery. Gabriel also experienced seizures and ongoing neurological damage. Leslie, his mother, explained, “If you delve into that, it affects behavior and impulsiveness,” adding that it can contribute to mental illness.
Since earlier this year, the McNutt family had been actively seeking the best mental health care for Gabriel. Adam, his father, stated, “We did everything we could to support Gabriel and let him know that we would never give up on him.” The McNutts expressed their wish for better mental health resources in the state, as they had visited four facilities before finding one that could provide the necessary care for Gabriel.
