Following an incident at a construction site in northwest Omaha on Wednesday, an employee of Elkhorn Public Schools passed away, according to officials.
Around 10:30 a.m., police received a report of an injured person near Elkhorn North High School, North 180th Street and West Maple Road, and a significant law enforcement presence responded, according to the authorities.
The worker was hurt while working at a job site north of the football field, according to authorities, and was discovered by Douglas County deputies and Omaha fire rescue workers upon their arrival.
Elkhorn Public Schools said that the worker went into the high school’s geothermal well to fix a problem and stopped responding while there.
The worker was named by the district as Kevin Garrison, the maintenance supervisor at Elkhorn Public Schools.
“Kevin was about to start his 20th year as a district employee at Elkhorn Public Schools. He has been a devoted longtime employee.” The district sent an email to staff and families expressing its sympathies to the Garrison family, which includes Kevin’s wife, Deb, the current principal of EPS, and his daughters, Nikki and Rachel, who are all current teachers.
No one was ever in danger or under threat at the high school, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The high school’s power was turned off as a precaution, according to the district.
Because to the incident, Elkhorn North High School dismissed students early on Wednesday, according to officials.
