Elysia Kust,Mary Kust Obituary, Death; – A Marinette County man is facing charges of Homicide by Negligent Operation of a Vehicle after allegedly using his cell phone just before a crash that resulted in the deaths of two women in early June.
Scott Mathis, 46, has been charged with two counts of homicide in relation to the June 2 incident in the Town of Grover, where 44-year-old Elysia Kust and 73-year-old Mary Kust lost their lives. Witnesses reported that Mathis, driving an SUV, failed to stop at a stop sign on CTH W and collided with the vehicle carrying Elysia and Mary, who were traveling eastbound on CTH B. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities discovered phone activity on Mathis’ cell phone just before the crash occurred. Mathis is set to appear in court on July 22 at 8:30 a.m. to face the charges. The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation, with support from various agencies including the Peshtigo Police Department, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Town of Grover Fire Department, the Marinette County DA’s Office, and the Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office.
