BRUNSWICK, GA — Edward “Ed” Stephens, a cherished resident of Brunswick, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the age of 90. Known for his dedication to community service and his warm, friendly demeanor, Ed leaves behind a legacy of kindness, commitment, and love.
Edward Stephens was born on January 15, 1934, in Brunswick, Georgia, to the late Charles and Helen Stephens. Raised in a loving family, Ed was instilled with strong values and a sense of responsibility from a young age. He attended Glynn Academy, where he excelled academically and was a standout player on the school’s football team. After graduating in 1952, Ed went on to serve his country in the United States Navy, an experience that shaped his character and broadened his horizons.
Upon returning from military service, Ed pursued higher education at the University of Georgia, where he earned a degree in Business Administration in 1960. It was during his time at university that he met his future wife, Margaret “Peggy” Wilson. The two married in 1961 and embarked on a journey together that spanned over six decades.
Ed’s professional career was marked by dedication and leadership. He joined the Brunswick Shipyard Company, where he worked his way up to a senior management position. Over a career that spanned 35 years, Ed became known for his innovative approach to shipbuilding and his commitment to excellence. His colleagues respected him not only for his professional acumen but also for his mentorship and willingness to help others.
Beyond his professional life, Ed was deeply committed to his community. A long-time member of the Rotary Club of Brunswick, Ed participated in numerous service projects aimed at improving the lives of local residents. He was particularly passionate about youth mentorship programs and was instrumental in establishing scholarship funds for underprivileged students. Ed also served on the board of the Brunswick-Glynn County Library, where he was an advocate for literacy and education.
Ed and Peggy raised three children: David, Anne, and Timothy. As a father, Ed was known for his gentle guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support. He enjoyed spending time with his children and later his grandchildren, passing on his love for fishing, sailing, and the Georgia Bulldogs. Family gatherings at the Stephens’ home were filled with laughter, stories, and a deep sense of togetherness.
Friends and family remember Ed as a man of integrity, warmth, and generosity. He had a knack for making everyone feel welcome and valued. His love for Brunswick was evident in everything he did, from organizing community events to participating in local traditions. Ed’s kindness and positive outlook on life were contagious, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
A celebration of Edward Stephens’ life will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick, with Reverend James Harris officiating. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Friday, June 21, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Chapman Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Brunswick-Glynn County Library or the Rotary Club of Brunswick in Ed’s memory.
