The victims, both 21-year-old residents of Goleta, were identified as Dong Shan Ma and Mason W. Ryan, as reported by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Incident Overview: The accident took place just before 3 a.m. when a 2015 Ford Mustang, operated by a 19-year-old man from Santa Barbara, collided with a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta that was occupied by Ma and Ryan. The Jetta had reportedly come to a stop in the center median of the highway. The collision resulted in the vehicle igniting.
Ma succumbed to blunt-force injuries to his head and chest, while Ryan suffered fatal thermal injuries and smoke inhalation. Both were declared dead at the scene, while the driver of the Mustang survived.
