A suspected drunk driving crash in north Spokane on Sunday morning resulted in one fatality and three injuries, according to authorities. The driver, later arrested on multiple charges including vehicular homicide, remains in custody.
The victim, identified as 47-year-old Dickson Keija, succumbed to his injuries two days after the accident. His city of residence has not been confirmed.
Preliminary reports indicate that the crash occurred around 9:35 a.m. when a 27-year-old man driving a 2009 Subaru Tribeca at high speed on Addison Street collided with a 2013 Nissan LEAF, which was turning north onto Addison from Central Street. The force of the impact propelled the Subaru into a nearby home.
Keija, a passenger in the Subaru, was critically injured and later died in the hospital. Another passenger in the Subaru, along with both occupants of the Nissan, sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized.
The Subaru driver is being held in Spokane County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
The incident highlights the dangers of drunk driving, which experts emphasize is entirely preventable. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 30 people die in the U.S. daily due to drunk-driving crashes—averaging one death every 50 minutes—with over 10,000 fatalities each year.
As investigations continue, legal experts stress the importance of an independent inquiry. Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, noted that experienced attorneys can gather crucial evidence, such as witness.
