Deputy Jessie Perez Obituary, Death; – A deputy from the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office tragically lost his life after being hit by debris from a commercial vehicle during a traffic stop, as reported by KCBD.
Deputy Jessie Perez, aged 42, was performing the stop on April 21 when the incident took place. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) stated that he was taken to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Although Perez had only been with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office for eight months, he had a long history of community service, having served as a city councilmember in O’Donnell, a firefighter with the O’Donnell Volunteer Fire Department, and an EMT with Lynn County EMS and other emergency medical services.
DPS spokesperson Steven Blanco remarked, ‘Traffic stops are among the most perilous tasks an officer can undertake in law enforcement, whether with the sheriff’s office, police department, or state trooper — which is why we have laws regarding move over protocols.’ The Texas Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash. Various agencies and community organizations have released statements honoring Perez’s life and contributions: The City of O’Donnell stated, ‘Jessie served our council with a passion to improve [the city]… He will be profoundly missed.’ The O’Donnell Volunteer Fire Department expressed, ‘A significant void is left in many hearts… Our thoughts and prayers are with Jessie’s family.’
The Lynn County Healthcare System noted, ‘His legacy will endure in the hearts of those he assisted and in the spirit of service he represented.’ Perez was awarded his badge in August 2024 and was recognized for his dedication to public service. He is fondly remembered for his compassion, commitment, and the enduring influence he had on multiple communities.
