Tūheitia Paki, born in 1955 in Huntly, New Zealand, was educated in Waikato and Auckland. He ascended to the role of King on August 21, 2006, following the death of his mother, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu. In accordance with Māori tradition, Tūheitia will lie in state at Turangawaewae Marae for five days. He will then be taken to his final resting place on Taupiri Mountain, a site of great significance in Māori culture.
Throughout his reign, Tūheitia has been a prominent advocate for Māori rights and has represented the Kiingitanga at key events, including the funeral of King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV of Tonga in 2006 and the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London in 2023.
