The catastrophe struck almost 11 hours into the retired insurance worker’s journey from Heathrow. He and his spouse were leaving on a once-in-a-lifetime six-week vacation to South East Asia, Indonesia, and Australia. The plane encountered an air pocket and dropped 6,000 feet in a matter of five minutes, causing chaos inside and necessitating an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok.
Fearful passengers have recounted how the jet abruptly dipped while the staff was delivering breakfast, giving them little to no time to fasten their seatbelts. One passenger claimed that people were “launched into the ceiling” as the plane plummeted through the sky. Of the 211 passengers and 18 crew on board, Thai authorities said 71 people had been sent for treatment, six of whom were seriously injured, with many sustaining lacerations to the head as they were thrown upwards.
