Durand, WI – The Durand community is mourning the loss of David Wilson and Sarah Thompson, who died in a tragic vehicle accident early Saturday morning. The incident, which occurred around 4:42 AM on May 18, 2024, required a swift response from Durand EMS and the Eau Claire Fire Department.
David Wilson, 45, and Sarah Thompson, 38, were well-known local volunteers, deeply involved in various community service projects. The accident took place on a rural road outside Durand, where their vehicle reportedly lost control and collided with a tree. Emergency services were immediately paged to the scene for what was initially reported as possibly two patients requiring urgent medical attention.
Upon arrival, EMS personnel and an Eau Claire Fire Department medic found both Wilson and Thompson with critical injuries. Despite the best efforts of the emergency responders, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that poor road conditions and low visibility may have contributed to the accident.
David Wilson was a beloved figure in Durand, known for his tireless work with the local food bank and youth sports programs. Friends and family remember him as a selfless individual who always put others first. “David was the kind of person who would drop everything to help someone in need,” said longtime friend and fellow volunteer, Mike Harper. “His loss leaves a huge void in our community.”
Sarah Thompson was equally cherished, celebrated for her dedication to animal rescue and her involvement with the local shelter. “Sarah had a heart of gold,” said Janet Mitchell, director of the shelter. “She dedicated countless hours to caring for animals and ensuring they found loving homes. Her compassion and kindness were unmatched.”
The deaths of Wilson and Thompson have left the community in shock. A memorial service is planned for next week at the Durand Community Center, where residents can pay their respects and share memories of the two volunteers who touched so many lives.
David Wilson is survived by his wife, Laura, and their three children. Sarah Thompson is survived by her parents, John and Emily Thompson, and her sister, Rachel. Both families have requested privacy as they grieve their losses.
In honor of Wilson and Thompson’s contributions, the community has set up a joint memorial fund to support the causes they were passionate about. Donations will go towards the local food bank, youth sports programs, and the animal shelter, ensuring that their legacies continue to make a positive impact.
