David Pleasant Obituary, Death; – A trial date has been established for an individual charged with the fatality of a Memphis firefighter during a vehicular incident in 2022. Maurice Yarbrough faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
Reports indicate that the firefighter was responding to an emergency call when his fire truck was collided with by Yarbrough, who allegedly ran a red light while impaired. The deceased firefighter has been identified as David Pleasant, a veteran of the fire department with 32 years of service.
Additionally, three other firefighters sustained injuries due to the incident. During Yarbrough’s court appearance on Thursday morning, Pleasant’s daughters expressed to WREG their belief that they are progressing toward justice with the establishment of a new trial date.
“It appears that we are moving closer to closure in this case. While I wouldn’t say it will happen soon, it is on the horizon,” stated Michelle Pleasant. “We are genuinely relieved that a trial date has been set.”
Initially, Yarbrough was not scheduled for a trial as the District Attorney’s office had proposed an eight-year plea agreement. However, that offer has now been rescinded. Pleasant’s other daughter, Anna Pleasant, contends that the plea deal was unjust.
“That was a significant issue for us because not only was our father killed, but three other firefighters were severely injured, and they continue to deal with the repercussions of that incident two years later,” Anna remarked. One of the injured firefighters was compelled to retire due to medical reasons stemming from the accident.
“We are optimistic that the trial will allow for additional charges to be considered for the other injured firefighters. We hope that this will be addressed,” Anna added. “I recall organizing a large birthday celebration for him at the fire station, which was truly enjoyable. Being a firefighter was a major part of his identity, and he cherished the opportunity to serve our community in that capacity.”
The charge of vehicular homicide due to intoxication carries a potential sentence ranging from 8 to 12 years for the defendant.
