David Maland Obituary, Death; – A U.S. Border Patrol agent who tragically lost his life during a traffic stop near the Canadian border has been named. The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Monday along Interstate 91 in Vermont, roughly 20 miles from the Canadian border.
In a statement released by House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green (R-TN), the agent was identified as David Maland. Agent Maland was part of the Swanton Sector, which encompasses areas of Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Agent David Maland, a committed Border Patrol agent who was brutally shot while performing his duties at our northern border,” Chairman Green remarked. “We owe a profound debt of gratitude to Agent Maland for nearly ten years of service dedicated to safeguarding our communities.
It is crucial to remember that the men and women in green, who stand on the frontlines of this border crisis, protect our homeland at significant personal risk. Tragically, these brave public servants, like Agent Maland, often pay the highest price. I urge everyone to join me in prayer for Agent Maland’s family and fellow agents as they grieve this heartbreaking loss and celebrate his legacy.”
Essex County State’s Attorney Vince Illuzzi informed WCAX that he was on the interstate at the time of the traffic stop and observed the agent approaching a small blue vehicle that had been pulled over. Illuzzi noted that the agent was conversing with an individual standing in front of his truck, positioned behind the car.
Sources also indicated to WCAX that the agent sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the neck and subsequently died. One suspect was also killed, while another sustained injuries.
Details regarding the motive behind the shooting remain unclear, and the identities of the suspects have not yet been disclosed. As of Tuesday, the FBI has taken over the investigation into the shooting. Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamine Huffman released a statement regarding the death of the Swanton Sector agent, emphasizing, “Every single day, our Border Patrol agents place themselves in danger to ensure the safety of Americans and our homeland.”
