David C West Obituary, Death; – The Piqua Police Department has confirmed the identity of the individual who was fatally shot by an officer during a domestic disturbance incident on Friday, along with additional details regarding the event.
As stated in a release from the city, 44-year-old David C. West is alleged to have assaulted his mother at their residence on McKinley Avenue. When four officers arrived in response to the complaint shortly before 5 p.m. on February 21, they discovered that West was located in the basement.
West informed the officers from the top of the stairs that he was armed. Despite repeated commands to either show his hands or ascend the stairs, he did not comply. Eventually, West came into view, reportedly aiming the firearm at the officers, which led one officer to discharge his weapon. West was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer who discharged his weapon, who sustained no injuries, has not faced any charges. In accordance with standard protocol, he has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducts an inquiry into the incident at the request of the Piqua Police.
The remaining three officers are currently on active duty. West’s 65-year-old mother sustained injuries during the assault that prompted the police response. His father was also present in the home. The Piqua Police have indicated that no further updates will be provided until the investigation by the Ohio BCI is concluded.
