Darlene Covert Death: Darlene Covert, a cherished resident of Hiawatha, KS, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by her family at Anew Health Care Center in Hiawatha. Born on April 6, 1939, in Humboldt, Nebraska, Darlene was one of eight children born to Roy and Stella Krensel Bauer.
A Life of Hard Work and Dedication
Darlene attended schools in the surrounding area before moving to Hiawatha, where she spent most of her life raising her family. Known for her strong work ethic, Darlene often held down two jobs simultaneously as a single mother, ensuring she could support her family. Her career began at Monarch Egg Plant in Hiawatha, and she worked for over 30 years at Wilde Tool Company. Additionally, she was a cook at Nakomis Restaurant and Cottonwood and later worked as a cook for BCDS (Brown County Developmental Services). Darlene also served as a nurse aide/CNA for Oak Ridge Acres Nursing Home in Hiawatha.
Devoted Member of the Community
Darlene was a dedicated member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha. She had a passion for sports, particularly KU Basketball and Cardinals Baseball, which she enthusiastically followed.
Cherished by Family
Darlene is survived by her two daughters, Jackie Bianchi (Tim) of Hiawatha and Sandy Walker of Mountain Home, Arkansas; her son, Charlie Covert of Lawrence; her twin brother, Darrell Bauer (Sara) of Hiawatha; and her brother, Arlan Bauer (Debbie) of Wichita. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in Death by Loved Ones
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Wayne Covert, Jr.; her grandson, Robert Bianchi; her sister, Esther Koeperich; and four brothers: Donald Bauer, John Bauer, Harold ‘PeeWee’ Bauer, and Harlan Bauer.
Celebration of Life
A celebration of Darlene’s eternal life is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha, with Pastor Brian Holle officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha. Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home on Thursday and Friday until 5 p.m. The family will meet with friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service on Saturday.
