Corey’s journey was marked by exceptional achievements and a profound commitment to service. A graduate of Lexington Senior High School, he played football on the championship team of 1985/1986. Corey earned his Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University and his Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law, becoming the first African American Assistant District Attorney for North Carolina Prosecutorial District 22.
His professional path included roles at IBM Corporation, General Electric Company, Duke Power Company, and Wachovia Corporation. In December 2006, Corey founded The Law Offices of Corey D. Buggs, PLLC, leaving an indelible mark on the legal community.
A lifelong member of Files Chapel Baptist Church, Corey served in various capacities, embodying his dedication to his faith. His contributions extended to numerous boards and associations, reflecting his commitment to community welfare.
Corey is survived by his devoted wife, Sophie Wood Buggs; his son, Will D. Buggs; bonus children Nasheed “Zia” Peoples and NaQuia “Bella” Wood; siblings Carmen Cotton, Helen Ferguson, Tanyel Chaney, Jasmine (Steven) Henry, and Jamall Steel; a special cousin Raynard Horton; uncles Alfonzo (Modestine) Richards and Calvin (Reverend Judy) Richards; great uncle Bobby (Mary Ann) Richards; sisters-in-law Marquita Wood, Vera Small, Bridget (Kenneth) Well; brother-in-law Desmond Cade; godchildren Xavier Wall and Kennedi Cade; a special cousin Patricia King, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
