John Phillipich, Death – A proud World War II Navy veteran and longtime resident of Sherman, Illinois, passed away peacefully at the age of 100 on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. Born on January 9, 1924, in Springfield, John lived a full and dedicated life marked by service to his country, community, and family. He was the son of John and Julia (Kerelz) Phillipich and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Hettinger, whom he married on July 25, 1972, and who passed away on March 15, 2012.
John was also preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Helen Hutton. He is survived by his stepdaughter, Ivajean (James) Maguda of Concord, California; two stepsons, Jack (Debbie) Patterson of Sherman, Illinois, and Richard (Stacy) Patterson of Riverton, Illinois; along with six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the cherished memories of their beloved stepfather and grandfather.
John’s legacy is deeply rooted in his service to the United States during World War II. As a Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Idaho (BB-42), a battleship that played a significant role in the Pacific theater. His experiences during the war forged a lifelong sense of patriotism and duty, and he remained committed to supporting veterans throughout his life. He volunteered extensively for the VA, dedicating his time to helping fellow veterans, and was a proud lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Elks Lodge #158.
In addition to his military service, John was a hard-working member of the Teamsters Union #910 out of St. Louis. He retired as an over-the-road truck driver, where he spent years navigating long distances and earning the respect of his colleagues for his dedication and professionalism. John’s work ethic and commitment to his craft were evident in all he did.
Outside of his professional life, John was an active and engaged member of his community. His contributions to organizations such as the Elks and VFW exemplified his desire to give back and support those around him. His legacy of service, love for family, and commitment to his community will be remembered by all who knew him.
