Cole L M Turne Obituary, Death; – A teenager was fatally shot on Tuesday evening during an incident involving law enforcement in southwest Bloomington, as reported by the McLean County Coroner.
Kathleen Yoder confirmed that 15-year-old Cole L.M. Turner succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds resulting from the incident that took place in the 800 block of Arcadia Drive around 5 p.m. Toxicology tests were conducted in accordance with state law, and the results are currently pending.
Bloomington Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed individual in the 700 block of Freemont Drive in the southwestern area of the city on Tuesday afternoon. Upon their arrival, officers engaged with an individual at the location. The situation escalated, leading to the discharge of firearms, which resulted in the individual being struck by police bullets. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene by the McLean County Coroner. On Wednesday afternoon, Bloomington police spokesman Bryce Janssen issued a statement addressing the incident:
“We recognize that there are numerous inquiries regarding Tuesday’s officer-involved shooting, and we are dedicated to facilitating an unbiased, fair, thorough, and lawful investigation. The Illinois State Police, Division of Criminal Investigation, is overseeing the investigation in accordance with state-mandated protocols to ensure an independent and impartial review. To maintain the integrity of this process, we are directing all inquiries to them and will continue to fully cooperate and support their efforts.”
In compliance with state law, the state police are responsible for investigating all officer-involved shootings to eliminate any potential bias or conflict of interest.
The state police will carry out their investigation and, upon completion, will submit their findings to the McLean County State’s Attorney, who will determine whether the actions taken were within the parameters of police protocols. Under Illinois law, law enforcement officers are permitted to use deadly force if they reasonably believe, based on the totality of the circumstances, that such force is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm.
