CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders are asking for community feedback as they develop policies concerning Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom.
District officials released a survey on Monday to garner public comments.
CMS leaders plan to unveil a district-wide AI Vision Statement before Summer 2025.
CMS Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill said the vision statement should reflect the voices of parents, students, educators, and community members.
“AI is quickly becoming a larger part of our lives,” said Dr. Hill in a statement. “We need to work together now to create a vision for how we can best utilize this emerging technology to support students and schools. We can chart an innovative and responsible course to use AI in service of our four pillars of excellence: academic excellence, people excellence, operational excellence, and engagement excellence.”
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction released a guidebook for districts on using generative AI in January 2024. Department officials said NCDPI was the fourth state education department in the country to offer recommendations to schools on the technology.
The document addresses how to combat challenges like academic dishonesty and student privacy while utilizing the potential of the software. The guidebook says teachers can utilize AI for tasks like administrative responsibilities, reviewing student performance data, and adapting lessons for different learning abilities.
The survey from CMS closes on Friday, February 21.
District officials are in the process of setting up focus or advisory group meetings.
