At approximately 4:00 PM on Monday, July 29, 2024, Harris County Sheriff Homicide Investigators were dispatched to 20510 Cypress Plaza Parkway (Alys Crossing Apartments) in connection with a Homicide Investigation. EMS and Harris County Constable Precinct 5 deputies were dispatched to apartment # 14107 in response to an ongoing demand for service. The incident involved a man, Kerry Cunningham, who had shot another man, Clifton Lee Johnson, aged 39, during a physical altercation or argument. Cunningham, who had wounded Johnson, was attempting to administer assistance to him when deputies and EMS arrived at the site.
Johnson, who sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, was transported to Memorial Hermann Downtown Hospital in critical condition via life flight after Cunningham was temporarily detained. While Crime Scene deputies processed the scene, investigators conducted interviews and examined the evidence, as well as security video from inside the apartment. They discovered that a woman resided in the apartment and had relocated there in order to escape her estranged spouse. Cunningham, the woman’s estranged husband, arrived at her apartment today while she was with Johnson.
He immediately began attempting to gain entry by bashing in the door and using a screwdriver. He was able to gain entry and was observed to have a handgun in his waistband. Johnson was concealing himself in the bedroom when Cunningham entered it. Johnson was shot in the face after a physical altercation and an argument ensued. Kerry Cunningham was interviewed and subsequently charged with capital murder after providing a statement. He is presently in custody at the Harris County jail after being transported there. Johnson had recently arrived in Houston from Florida and did not have any family members in the vicinity. In order to verify the cause and manner of death, an autopsy will be conducted within the next 24 hours.
