Christine Michaels Obituary, Death Cause – On Friday, August 11, 2023, Christine Sarantakes Michaels, age 94, of Allegheny Township, Pennsylvania, passed away in a calm manner. She was a cherished wife, mother, and Yiayia. At the Allegheny Valley Hospital Hospice Care in Natrona Heights, she was surrounded by her family throughout her final days.
Christine had a blessed life that was full of the people she loved, her faith, and her family and friends.
She was the oldest child of the late Evangelos Sarantakes and Ourania (Tampalis) Sarantakes. Despite being the oldest child, she was the shortest child. She was born on July 3, 1929 in Teague, Texas. Christine received her training as a medical technician at Incarnate Word College, which she attended.
After that, she spent a significant amount of time working at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Christine was a dedicated member of St. Sophia’s Church, and it was there that she eventually stumbled onto the man who would become her husband.
William (Bill) Michaels, who would later become Christine’s husband, was spending his final day of vacation in San Antonio, Texas, in the summer of 1960 when he happened to walk inside the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. There, he caught a glimpse of Christine. They didn’t know each other for very long before they were married due to the rapidity with which they had fallen in love. Soon after that, they made the trip to Athens, Greece, to adopt a pair of identical twin boys and gave them the names Lee and Nicholas. They were blessed with another child, a son they named Kimon, who was born three years later.
Christine joined both the Dormition Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in Oakmont and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland and became an active member of both congregations. She also gave her time at the festival in addition to attending the weekly Bible study classes. Christine filled her spare time with activities such as reading a wide variety of literature, cooking, baking, and sewing. She was a very kind and generous hostess who delighted in the company of her family, friends, and colleagues.
