Chinese Man, Arrested For Illegal Entry, Passed Away After Suicide Attempt In Bihar Jail: A Chinese national from Shandong province, identified as Li Jiaqi, died on Tuesday after allegedly attempting suicide in a jail in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, officials reported. Li Jiaqi had been detained for illegally entering India without valid travel documents. Li was arrested on June 6 near Laxmi Chowk under the jurisdiction of the Brahmapura police station. During his arrest, authorities discovered he did not possess a valid visa or any other necessary travel documentation.
In his possession were a map of China, a mobile phone, and currencies from China, Nepal, and India. Charged under The Foreigners Act, 1946, Li was placed in the Amar Shaheed Khudiram Bose Central Prison. Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Kumar confirmed the arrest and the recovery of items from Li Jiaqi. “The Chinese man was arrested for not carrying valid travel documents, including a visa. A case has been registered against him under the relevant sections of the Foreigners Act,” said SSP Kumar.
On June 7, Li was found unconscious and severely injured in the prison hospital’s toilet. He had apparently used broken eyeglasses to inflict injuries on himself. Prison authorities promptly transferred him to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur. Despite medical efforts, Li succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday. The hospital provided further details about the incident: “On June 7, he was found injured and unconscious in the toilet of the prison’s hospital after attempting to cut important body parts with broken eyeglasses.
He was immediately shifted to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, by the jail authorities, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.” This tragic incident highlights the complexities and challenges faced by foreign nationals detained for immigration violations and underscores the need for vigilance and appropriate mental health support for detainees. Further investigations are ongoing to understand the full circumstances surrounding Li Jiaqi’s death.
