Cheyanne R Humphrey Arrested; – A confrontation regarding a suspected burglary resulted in the shooting death of a man in Mead.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a reported shooting at approximately 12:55 a.m. on Monday on North Sheridan Street.
The 911 caller reported that she and a man, identified as 47-year-old Cheyanne R. Humphrey, witnessed two individuals allegedly stealing items from a neighboring residence. When they confronted the suspects, one fled, while the other was shot by Humphrey.
Upon arrival, deputies first engaged with Humphrey, who was found with a bleeding head injury, reportedly inflicted by a rock thrown by one of the suspects. He informed the deputies that one of the suspects had been shot and remained inside the house.
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office stated that deputies forcibly entered the residence and discovered an unresponsive man lying on the floor. Despite efforts from deputies, Spokane County Fire District 9 firefighters, and American Medical Response personnel to administer first aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Humphrey recounted to deputies that he observed a man placing items into a basket at his neighbor’s home. In response, he armed himself with a handgun and, accompanied by the woman, went outside to confront the individual, instructing him to leave.
The suspect fled on foot, but the woman noticed another man inside the house. She confronted him through a window, urging him to exit as well. Humphrey reported that he was then struck in the head with what he believed to be a rock, prompting him to fire a “warning shot.”
He reiterated his demand for the man to leave, but the individual allegedly began to assault the woman with a rock through the window, leading Humphrey to shoot at him again. Afterward, Humphrey informed deputies that the man did not respond to his inquiries, prompting him to unload his handgun and place it on the ground while the woman called 911.
Deputies also spoke with a man who claimed ownership of the trailer but stated he had been recently evicted.
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office indicated that preliminary information suggests the two men confronted by Humphrey may have previously resided at the location before their eviction and were allegedly attempting to retrieve personal belongings still inside.
