CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — As winter weather conditions worsen on Wednesday, some Charlotte area school districts are opting to go remote, close, or delay the start of school.
Snow, ice, and freezing rain present hazardous driving conditions, making it dangerous for buses and vehicles to travel safely.
As a result, school officials closely monitor weather forecasts and road conditions to determine whether it is safe for students to attend class. While these closures can be disruptive, they are essential to keeping everyone out of harm’s way.
Below is a developing list of school closures, delays, and remote learning:
Burke County Schools: A “true snow day” with no school and no remote learning. Staff will have an optional workday.
Catawba County Schools: Remote Learning Day, Wednesday, Feb. 19. QUEST will not operate.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools: Remote Learning Day, Wednesday, Feb. 19. There will be no extracurricular activities, facility use, or athletics.
Community School of Davidson: Half-Day/Early-Release on Wednesday, Feb. 19. No after-school activities.
Newton-Conover City Schools: Remote Learning Day, Wednesday, Feb. 19. Kid Connection will be closed.
While this will not be a major winter storm for the Charlotte area, it will still have impacts on travel, especially Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.
We will start to see wintry precipitation move in Wednesday morning around 8-10 a.m. This will start as a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet for the Charlotte metro, with snow north of Charlotte towards Interstate 40.
By Wednesday afternoon and evening, we will just be tracking scattered snow showers across the region. The wintry mix will decrease as the day goes on.
Very light snowfall accumulations are expected for the Charlotte metro, with only a trace to an inch of snow likely. Spots along I-40 will experience 1-2″ of snow. While the mountains could see between 2-3″ of snow, possibly some isolated higher totals in the high country.
