Carey Crain Death and Obituary: Dorothy Carey Rather Crain, a beloved member of the Holly Springs community, passed away on August 6, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Desoto. Born on January 20, 1952, in Memphis to John Edward Rather Sr. and Dorothy Powers Rather, Carey dedicated her life to education and service.
Career and Contributions
Carey Crain was a respected science educator who spent 33 years at Marshall Academy. From 1974 to 2007, she played a vital role in the school’s academic environment, teaching advanced scientific programs and serving as the Senior Class Sponsor and Patriot Yearbook Advisor. Even after her retirement from the Mississippi Public School System, Carey continued to contribute to the school as a substitute teacher, where her presence was always appreciated.
Family and Legacy
Carey is survived by her son, Donald Allen Crain Jr. (Liz Ann) of Phoenix, Arizona, and her daughter, Dr. Sarah Frances Crain of Olive Branch. She also leaves behind her beloved grandson, Theodore “Teddy” Allen Crain, her sister Marie Rather McClatchy (CB), and her brother Dr. John Edward Rather Jr. (JoLinda). Additionally, she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Carey’s husband of 32 years, Donald Allen Crain Sr., and her grandson, Henry Augustus Crain, preceded her in death.
Memorial Services
To celebrate Carey’s life, a visitation will be held at Holly Springs Funeral Home on Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow at Christ Episcopal Church on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. The family invites those who knew Carey to join in commemorating her life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carey’s memory can be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Box 596, Holly Springs, MS 38635. The family appreciates the support and kindness extended during this time of grief.
