In his seven-year career with GWS and Fremantle, McCarthy participated in 70 games in the Australian Football League and kicked 99 goals. In 2013, the Giants selected him with the fourteenth overall pick, and he played in one game during his first season with the team. Even though he was under contract until 2017, he made a request to be traded back to his home state of Washington after having a breakout year in 2015, in which he scored 35 goals in 20 games.
Despite the fact that the Giants were able to stop the maneuver, McCarthy was forced to leave the game because of difficulties related to his mental health. It was his decision to go back to Washington, and he did not participate in any AFL games during the whole 2016 season. After that, he was granted his request and was traded to Fremantle during the trade period of that particular year. Cam McCarthy obituary will be released in due time
