Former Nebraska football running back Calvin Jones passed away this week at the age of 54.
Omaha firefighters responded to a call about a gas smell coming from Jones’ home on Wednesday night. When they found him, he had already passed.
No official cause of death has been released, but police say it aligns with carbon monoxide poisoning.
Jones attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and played under head coach Tom Osborne from 1990-1993.
In his redshirt freshman season in 1991, the Omaha native set the Nebraska school record for rushing yards and touchdowns in a single game. He ran for 294 yards and six touchdowns in a November matchup with Kansas. The touchdown record still holds today.
Jones earned Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year honors the following season in 1992.
In his career, he scored 40 touchdowns and ran for more than 3,000 yards.
In 1994, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders and won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers in 1996.
