The community of South Dakota and beyond is mourning the loss of Bridget Arens Schumacher, a former Coyote women’s basketball standout, beloved wife, mother of four, and cherished friend. Bridget passed away on October 25, 2023, leaving a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved her. Her friend Carmen Backman shared the news on social media, remembering Bridget’s unwavering positivity, faith, and compassion for others.
Backman’s heartfelt tribute painted a portrait of Bridget as “a shining star,” one who was known for her vibrant, energetic spirit and her deeply compassionate nature. “She was wise beyond her 30 short years,” Backman wrote. Above all, Bridget was a devoted mother to her four young children, who range in age from nine months to five years, and a loving wife. In honor of her legacy, friends and family are encouraged to share their fondest memories or favorite photos of her.
As Bridget’s family navigates this difficult time, they ask for prayers to support them in their grief. For those wishing to offer additional support, the family requests gifts in the form of care packages for Bridget’s children, rather than traditional flowers or plants.
The University of South Dakota’s Women’s Basketball team, with whom Bridget forged her legacy as a Coyote student-athlete, also expressed sorrow at her passing. “We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Coyote student-athlete Bridget (Arens) Schumacher. Please keep Bridget’s family in your thoughts and prayers,” the team shared.
A prayer for peace and comfort was shared by Backman, inviting God’s loving presence during this time of sorrow. “Father God, we come before You with broken hearts. In this darkest valley, we seek Your peace and comfort. Surround Bridget’s family with Your loving arms and grant them the strength to face the coming days. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.”
Funeral service details will be forthcoming. Bridget’s family, friends, and community hold her memory close, honoring the compassionate, joyful life she led and the light she brought to others.
