Brian Wright Jr Obituary, – A man from Topeka who was taken into custody in connection with a recent murder on the west side of the city has been released from the Shawnee County Jail, as confirmed by authorities. Dasanee Curry, 18, was released from the jail on July 2, according to officials who made the announcement on Tuesday.
Curry had been arrested and placed in the Shawnee County Jail on June 28 in relation to the fatal shooting of Brian Wright Jr., 23, from Topeka. The shooting incident took place around 2:15 a.m. on June 21 in the vicinity of the 3100 block of S.W. Westover Road. Another woman was reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries during the same incident.
Curry was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Shawnee County Jail on charges including first-degree murder, aggravated endangering a child, criminal discharge of a firearm, and criminal damage to property. Prior to his release from the Shawnee County Jail, Curry was being held on a $1 million bond, authorities stated.
Since no formal charges had been filed, Curry was released from jail without the need to post bail, according to authorities. On Tuesday, officials informed 13 NEWS that Curry was released from jail while awaiting the filing of charges in the case. Authorities mentioned that the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office has a period of up to five years to file charges in connection with this case.
Wright was the seventh homicide victim in the city of Topeka in 2024. Law enforcement officials stated that the incident was linked to gang-related activities. On June 29, the police requested the public’s assistance in locating Nassir Gill, 19, from Topeka, who was identified as a person of interest in the case.
