Brian Curtis Derby Obituary: The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office has named the man who died in a quarry near Sterling on Thursday as Brian Curtis Derby, 67, of Townsend.
Yesterday morning, shortly before 8 a.m., emergency personnel were called to the quarry at 17 Stone Crest Way after a rock ledge fell over the excavator that Derby was operating.
Responders examined the location with the use of video equipment and discovered no indications of life. Derby passed away Tuesday morning at 8:39 a.m.
The District 8 Technical Rescue Team, which drew on resources from many nearby departments, including Barre, Clinton, Leominster, Fitchburg, Gardner, Holden, Sterling, and West Boylston, finally retrieved his corpse after nightlong recovery attempts. Derby’s body was removed from the site by the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner early on Friday morning.
