TURIN, Italy (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Watauga County snowboarder conquered the slopes and took gold in the Special Olympics World Winter Games Tuesday.
Trent D’Agostino was the winner in the Intermediate Giant Slalom competition in the Alps of northern Italy. The 24-year-old completed the course in 1:57.450, more than two seconds ahead of the runner up, Mexico’s Alejandro Elias Gonzalez.
Queen City news featured D’Agostino last month as he prepared to head overseas. He started snowboarding at age 10.
“I don’t really know how to explain it, it’s just adrenaline going down as fast as you can,” he said from Appalachian Ski Mountain. “Just the thrill of having the open slope to you.”
Other NC athletes in Turin include skier Stephen Foster of Fairview and Charlotte figure skater Ashley Tanner. The games run through Saturday.
