Bonney Wheatley Death – On Monday, a tragic multi-car crash occurred on Highway 70 eastbound in Wilsons Mills, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to six others. The incident took place near the Swift Creek Road overpass in Johnston County, shortly after 1 p.m. Chopper 11 provided an aerial view of the crash site, revealing multiple vehicles involved in the collision.
According to the Wilson Mills Police Department, a tractor-trailer collided with three other vehicles. The deceased driver was identified as 79-year-old Bonney Wheatley from Raleigh. The injured individuals, including occupants of the other cars and the truck driver, were transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Subsequently, the tractor-trailer driver, 77-year-old Robert Wallace from Smithfield, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. In response to the incident, authorities temporarily closed Highway 70 eastbound, redirecting traffic onto Swift Creek Road.
The road was reopened just prior to 5:45 p.m. The Highway Patrol, Wilson’s Mills Fire Department, and Johnston County EMS provided assistance at the scene.
