(PINPOINT WEATHER) — Frigid temperatures kick off the work week as 20s and teens have settled in from our mountain counties into uptown. Skies are mostly clear with winds coming in out of the north. Those winds will add an extra bite to the air with a wind chill in the negatives for parts of our mountain counties.
Look for an Extreme Cold Warning to be in effect for Watauga and Ashe Counties through 12 PM this afternoon. Be sure to limit time outdoors and cover any exposed skin if you must be outside. Frostbite and hypothermia can onset pretty quickly in these cold conditions.
Sunshine will dominate for much of our Martin Luther King Jr. Day as winds continue to flow out of the north. Look for highs to land in the low to mid-30s today while our mountain counties only peak in the teens.
We’ll usher in another bitterly cold morning with lows falling into the teens and single digits in our higher elevations. Winds will be light but enough to make things that much worse heading into your early morning hours on Tuesday.
Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas along the I-85 corridor will be in a Cold Weather Advisory Tuesday morning until 10 AM with wind chills as cold as 4 degrees below zero in some spots.
We’ll be tracking a low-pressure system over the Gulf of Mexico Monday into Tuesday that will kick up moisture into our Gulf States and the southeast.
While Tuesday sees building clouds and highs in the 30s, this low-pressure system will have the potential for a few light snow flurries to develop as far north as the I-85 corridor. This could lead to, at best, a dusting of light snow in a few isolated spots south and east of the Queen City.
We’ll usher in another frigid morning Tuesday night into Wednesday with the arctic air very much locked in across the country. We’ll keep this pattern of highs in the 30s and lows in the teens for much of this week before the 40s return Friday heading into the weekend.
Tonight: Mostly Sunny & Cold. High: 34.
Tomorrow: Mostly Clear & Frigid. low: 17.
