Big Mike Sutton Death News: Beloved Resident Of Ozarks, Missouri, who brought Fry Street’s sense of community to his shops, dies at 70
Big Mike Sutton could seem gruff, but locals remember him as a Fry Street businessman and would-be City Council member whose heart was as big as his personality.
Sutton died May 3 in the Lake of the Ozarks area in Missouri, where he had moved after retiring. He had just celebrated his 70th birthday.
Mike Sutton sat for this portrait when he ran for City Council Place 5 in 2008.
Sutton, known in Denton as “Big Mike,” was probably best known for his business, Voyager’s Dream, in the Fry Street area near the University of North Texas.
It was the perfect spot for shoppers and seekers whose spiritualities leaned toward crystals, nature and good vibes.
The Hickory Street shop was full of hand drums, new-age music and all sorts of trinkets meant to make you feel centered.
He was also a dedicated pacifist who staffed the Peace Action Denton booth at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival.
He also created a “deathmobile” out of his car, writing the names, ages and hometowns of every U.S. service member killed in Afghanistan and Iraq since the wars started in 2001 and 2003.
