enny Rooney Obituary, Death Cause – Benny had time with Dumbarton, Cambuslang Rangers, and Petershill while on loan from Celtic. After playing for Dundee United for a few years, Bobby Brown purchased his services for the sum of £2,500 in March of 1966. The nine seasons that were played out at Muirton Park surpassed all expectations.
Benny was switched from the forward position to the defensive position by Willie Ormond, and his leadership and tenacity were instrumental in the Saints reaching their golden age. Benny participated in the semi-finals of both the League Cup and the Scottish Cup during the 1967–1968 season.
In 1969, we won the League Cup Final at Hampden Park against Celtic, but Celtic’s 1-0 win prevented Benny from hoisting the cup for St. Johnstone. The match was played at Hampden Park. Benny replaced Buck McCarry as the team’s primary ball-winner in the middle of the field during the 1970–1971 season, which contributed to the team’s third-place finish in the First Division, behind only Celtic and Aberdeen.
Benny was unable to play because of an injury, but the team was able to play European football because they finished in that position in the league. He participated in the first game, which was played away from home against SV Hamburg,
but he was out injured when the German team arrived in Perth. He did not participate in either leg against Vasas Budapest, but he did play both games against Zeljeznicar Sarajevo, and he scored our team’s only goal in the 5-1 loss that took place away from home. After playing for the entire 1972–1973 campaign, he was eventually transferred to Partick Thistle.
Although he managed Greenock Morton, Albion Rovers, and Partick Thistle, the Cappielow side he coached in the middle of the 1970s is the one that is remembered most. Benny has played for St. Johnstone a total of 289 times, including 289 starts (+ 4 as a substitute), and he has scored 21 goals. Many people are aware that Benny’s great nephew Shaun played for Saints and scored the lone goal in the 2021 League Cup Final. A few months later, Shaun scored the only goal in Saints’ triumph over Hibs in the Scottish Cup Final. McDiarmid Park extends their condolences to Benny’s family.
