Benjamin Prowell Obituary, Death; – Arkansas State Police officials have released additional details regarding an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Maumelle over the weekend.
As reported by state police, the individual who was fatally shot on Saturday was identified as 34-year-old Benjamin Prowell from Conway. According to officials from the Arkansas State Police, officers from the Maumelle Police Department were assisting the Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) with a situation involving Prowell during a disturbance in the 10000 block of Crystal Hill Road.
The officers attempted to apprehend Prowell; however, state police indicated that he allegedly brandished a knife. Officials from the Maumelle Police Department stated that the responding officers were unable to reach a peaceful resolution with Prowell before he advanced toward them with the weapon. The police deployed a Taser in an effort to subdue him, but it proved ineffective.
As Prowell continued to approach the officers, state police reported that the Maumelle officers discharged their firearms, striking him. Authorities confirmed that Prowell was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday.
No officers from the Maumelle Police Department sustained injuries during the incident, and those involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, according to state police. The Criminal Investigation Division of the Arkansas State Police will compile a case file to be submitted to the Pulaski County Prosecutor, who will determine whether the use of deadly force by the officers was in accordance with state law.
