PINEHURST, N.C. (WNCN) — A man taken to the hospital after a reported officer-involved shooting has died Wednesday morning in Pinehurst.
According to an official with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, around 7:18 a.m. Pinehurst police officers received a call about a suspicious person on Remington Lane.
Once on scene, officers said during their initial response they smelled smoke and called the Pinehurst Fire Department for support. NC SBI officials said officers also encountered a man with an axe on the scene. Officials said that the man approached officers and one officer then discharged his weapon.
The man was taken to the hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries, according to officials.

According to The Village of Pinehurst, officials ask that the public avoid Remington Lane in the area of Village Acres after Pinehurst Fire was responding to an incident.
Officials with the Village of Pinehurst said the firefighters were able to contain the fire during the shooting incident. They said no further injuries were reported at this time.
“The Pinehurst Police Department is fully cooperating with the SBI’s investigation,” Pinehurst officials said. “Our thoughts are with all involved in this tragic situation, and we remain committed to transparency throughout the investigative process.”
NCSBI agents are currently on scene investigating this incident. The identity of the man killed is withheld pending notification of next of kin.
