NEWBURGH, NY—District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced the conviction of James Rich, a 36-year-old Newburgh resident, on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a controlled substance. The jury returned their verdict on Monday, following a trial in Orange County Court. Rich was found guilty of fatally impaling a 76-year-old man with a metal broomstick in their shared Newburgh residence on March 14, 2023. Following the murder, Rich was captured on surveillance footage disposing of blood-stained clothing and was later arrested while hiding in a closet in another apartment, where the victim’s cell phone was also found. Police have identified a Fairfield County man who was killed in a single-car fiery crash in Shelton. Related: Man Killed In Fiery Shelton Crash Mauricio Sierra Zapata, age 24, of Shelton.was killed around 11:30 on Sunday, June 23, in the area of Commerce Drive and Research Drive. According to Det. Christopher Nugent of the Shelton Police, responding firefighters and police found the car on fire and pulled Zapata out of the vehicle. He was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The Shelton Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is actively investigating the incident.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Sea turtles, marine birds and children under 7 will be protected under a new Florida law that bans the intentional release of balloons. The law, signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday, replaces an existing ban of releasing ten or more balloons within 24 hours. SARASOTA, Florida (WFTS) — A Texas teen who was struck by lightning on Siesta Key Beach nearly four years ago has graduated from high school. Jacob Brewer was visiting Florida from Fort Worth, Texas, in July of 2020. His family noticed the sky turning dark, so they decided to leave the beach. Marion Street, received his sentence on June 17 from Lancaster County Judge Merrill Spahn.
