The Birmingham Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for 53-year-old Serena Starkey on charges of murder.
On Saturday, March 2, officers responded to a call about a person down at the Extended Stay America hotel on Cahaba Park Circle. Upon arrival, they found Aston Starkey, who was then taken to Grandview Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Following this, detectives launched an unclassified death investigation, and Shelby County DHR also began their own investigation. A preliminary investigation revealed that Aston’s death occurred under suspicious circumstances.
Shelby County DHR later informed the Homicide Unit that an autopsy revealed Aston died from malnutrition and dehydration, complicated by neglect. The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide.
