ASHEVILLE, N.C. ~ North Carolina Asheville police say they have arrested and charged a woman in connection with the death of a newborn that occurred in the fall of last year. In connection with the murder of 8-month-old Dani Harmon, investigators with the Asheville Police Department have charged Samantha Lynn Higgins (1/29/1993), age 30, with Involuntary Manslaughter and Felony Negligent Child Abuse Inflicting Serious Physical Injury. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
On September 26, 2022, around 11:30 a.m., officers from the Asheville Police Department rushed to Mission Hospital to investigate an overdose that had occurred in an infant who was 8 months old. The child was reportedly brought to Mission Hospital earlier that day from Atkinson Street, according to the police. On September 29, 2022, the infant, Dani Harmon, was identified as having passed away.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in North Carolina carried out an autopsy and ruled that the cause of death was “complications of blunt forces injuries of the head” and “sustained blunt forces head trauma; exposed to fentanyl.” After further investigation, it was determined that the baby had been killed in a homicidal way, which led to the charge of the baby’s mother, Higgins, who was taken into custody on Thursday, August 3, on Miller Street. Higgins was transferred to the Buncombe County Detention Facility, where a Magistrate served her with her warrants and issued a secure bond in the amount of $150,000. Higgins was then released on a secured bond.
