A man who was found stabbed to death inside his burned home in Augusta on Wednesday has been identified as Roy Bell Jr., authorities confirmed Thursday.
According to Sheriff Nathan Sions, 42-year-old April Einig admitted to deputies that she had stabbed Bell, and evidence gathered during the investigation supports her confession.
Einig was arrested during a traffic stop on U.S. Route 50 east of Romney around 3:38 a.m. Wednesday. Deputies reported that she was covered in blood and driving Bell’s Ford pickup at the time of her arrest.
She initially claimed that she had stabbed Bell, 70, in self-defense at his residence on Woodland Mountain Trail. However, Sheriff Sions stated that evidence did not support her account.
“All evidence collected by the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office indicates that April Einig acted alone,” Sions said, adding that surveillance footage from near the crime scene corroborated this conclusion.
Just minutes before Einig’s arrest, first responders were dispatched to a fire at Bell’s home. By the time firefighters arrived, the house was nearly destroyed. Bell’s remains were discovered once the flames were extinguished. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
As of Thursday, Einig was being held at the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
