Anthony Ray Gamez Death – The man shot and killed by deputies early Tuesday has been identified by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as Anthony Ray Gamez, 40. According to HCSO, Gamez was seen banging on windows and threatening people inside the Divine Mercy Prayer Center located off South Frontage Road in Plant City. Deputies who responded to the scene observed Gamez holding a railroad spike and growling as he paced behind an iron fence.
Bodycam footage captured Gamez advancing towards the deputies without dropping the spike, prompting them to use a taser before resorting to firing shots that resulted in his death. Sheriff Chad Chronister commended the actions of deputies Robert Sanchez and Jacob St. John, describing their response as “textbook.
” Both deputies are currently on paid leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts an investigation into the incident, following standard procedure.
