Stevens High School band director Andrew DeNicola, known affectionately as “Andy” or “Dean,” has sadly passed away. His death was announced through a heartfelt social media post: “I was saddened to hear the news last night that Andrew DeNicola left us too soon. He was a teacher, mentor, and a friend. Praying for his family and friends and all whose lives he touched. We were all better people for having known him. He was one of a kind. Let’s raise a White Castle in his memory. Rest in Peace Dean.”
In 1973, a 21-year-old Andrew DeNicola began his career at Woodrow Wilson School in Edison as a new music teacher. A music graduate from Montclair State University, DeNicola eagerly took on the role in his hometown. Known as “Andy” or “Dean” to his colleagues, he soon became the band director at J.P. Stevens High School, where he spent the next 50 years transforming the school’s band into an award-winning program.
DeNicola retired in the summer of 2023, leaving behind a rich legacy and a significant impact on the music community. During his illustrious career, he guided countless students and inspired many through his passion for music education. His commitment to his students and the arts earned him recognition and respect.
After joining Edison Public Schools, DeNicola married his neighborhood sweetheart, Kathy. His retirement coincided with their 50th wedding anniversary. In 2013, DeNicola was a top 10 finalist for the first GRAMMY Music Educator Award, and in 2019, he was inducted into the American Bandmasters Association. A dedicated family man, DeNicola always credited his wife Kathy for her unwavering support throughout his career.
