Andrew Christian Engel Obituary, Death; – Authorities have disclosed the identity of a 26-year-old man who was fatally shot by San Diego police earlier this week, along with the names of the officers involved in the incident.
Andrew Christian Engel, a resident of San Diego, was shot after police responded to an apartment on E Street, east of Eleventh Avenue in the East Village, shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday, following reports of a “suicidal male.”
Upon arrival, Officers Gavin Isa and Eric Moreno, along with six other individuals, evacuated the apartment, as stated in a release from the Sheriff’s Office on Thursday.
Engel, who was reportedly armed with a knife, allegedly “confronted” the officers and advanced towards them, according to Sheriff’s homicide Lieutenant Michael Krugh. The officers administered medical aid to Engel, who was subsequently transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Both Isa and Moreno have served with the San Diego Police Department for four and a half years, as noted by the Sheriff’s Office. In accordance with standard procedure for incidents involving police shootings in San Diego, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation.
