Anatoliy Manuylo Death – Sioux Falls Police announced on Thursday that the 35-year-old Valley Springs man who died in a motorcycle accident early Wednesday morning was engaged in high-speed racing. Officers were called to the intersection of E. Benson Road and N. Sycamore Ave at approximately 1 a.m. on June 12 to respond to a serious traffic collision. Upon arrival, they discovered that a motorcycle had collided with a parked car, resulting in the death of the motorcycle rider.
The deceased driver has been identified as Anatoliy Manuylo, a 35-year-old resident of Valley Springs.
Several individuals in the vicinity had parked their vehicles on the side of the road to witness the racing activity. Following conversations with witnesses, the investigation revealed that Manuylo and another motorcyclist were racing northbound on Sycamore at speeds exceeding 100 mph. It appears that a group had arranged to meet at this location for racing purposes.
During the Sioux Falls Police Briefing on Thursday, Police Chief Jon Thum addressed the dangers associated with this activity and discussed the department’s efforts to combat such behavior in recent months.
“We have increased our presence in the area. We have issued a record number of citations and focused our efforts on specific parts of the city. However, ultimately, it comes down to individual choices. The loss of life is tragic. That is why we are committed to deterring this type of behavior, as it has a profound impact on the families affected,” stated Chief Thum.
Chief Thum also mentioned that the SFPD has been in discussions with state legislators regarding the need for stricter penalties for those involved in high-speed racing. Currently, the punishment for such offenses typically involves a fine of up to $500.
