AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Amarillo police say they have arrested a man for murder after an assault victim died from their injuries Monday.
Police say on June 5 around 11:30 p.m., officers were called to the Georgia Street Taphouse on a man causing a disturbance and refusing to leave.
While officers were on the way, police say information came in that one man assaulted another man in the parking lot, causing life-threatening injuries, and an ambulance was requested. Police say the suspect left the scene.
The victim, 58-year-old Joe Luis Gonzales, was taken to an area hospital and later to Lubbock due to the severity of his injuries.
Police say in the early morning hours Monday, Gonzales died from his injuries.
The Amarillo Police Department Homicide Unit took over the investigation and a warrant for murder was issued for the suspect, 21-year-old Joel Arellano Mendez Jr.
Police say on June 11, Mendez Jr. was arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail on the murder warrant.
The case is still under investigation by the APD Homicide Unit.
