Amare Biftu Death – Authorities have reported that a driver employed by a ride-hailing service was tragically killed in a head-on collision near South 84th Street and Old Cheney Road in Nebraska. The crash, which involved a total of four vehicles, resulted in injuries to three other individuals. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, and emergency responders were promptly dispatched to the scene following reports of the collision.
Upon arrival, they discovered the wreckage along South 84th Street. An investigation revealed that one vehicle traveling south on 84th Street suddenly veered across the median, leading to a collision with the driver’s vehicle in the northbound lane. The impact of the head-on crash was so severe that it propelled the engine block of the driver’s vehicle into another vehicle in the right northbound lane.
Additionally, a vehicle behind the driver’s in the left lane collided with their vehicle as well. Tragically, the driver, identified as 49-year-old Amare Biftu from Lincoln, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a resident of Rhode Island, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment. It has been confirmed that Biftu was employed by Uber.
Fortunately, both drivers in the northbound lanes near Biftu’s vehicle escaped unharmed. However, the driver and passenger in the vehicle that crossed the southbound lane suffered serious injuries and were also transported to the hospital.
The crash report indicates that the driver of the vehicle that crossed the median, a 40-year-old woman from Lincoln, is suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident. Currently, no arrests or citations have been issued, and the Lincoln police are continuing their investigation, awaiting the results of toxicology tests for the 40-year-old driver.
