Ali Saleh Obituary, Death; – Rochester police said the man shot to death Sunday was working in the corner store on Clifford Avenue when he was killed.
Officers were called to the store at 1271 Clifford Ave. – just east of Portland Avenue – around 6 p.m. Sunday, said Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department. Ali Saleh, 30, of Rochester was shot multiple times and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after he arrived.
Tony C. Brown, 42, of Rochester was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, in connection with the homicide, said Capt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department. He is accused of entering the store, walking up to Saleh, who was working behind the counter, and shooting him several times at close range, Bello said.
Investigators said they believe the fatal shooting was “in retaliation for a previous altercation at the store” that involved an associate of Saleh several days earlier, Bello said in a news release.
Brown was apprehended Sunday evening near Portland Avenue, according to police. Officers executed a search warrant on a vehicle linked to Brown and a nearby residence and found a handgun and other evidence linked to the homicide, officers said. The slaying marked Rochester’s seventh homicide of 2025, according to RPD’s Open Data Portal. Brown is scheduled to be arraigned in City Court on Tuesday morning.
