After Making A Short Getaway, A Man Who Admitted Culpability To Two Double Homicides In New Mexico Is Apprehended Again. — A guy who had escaped from an Albuquerque juvenile jail and was awaiting sentencing in a double homicide case was back under arrest on Sunday.
Josef Toney, 19, broke free from the Youth Detention Center on Saturday afternoon and was apprehended on Sunday morning, according to Bernalillo County Sheriff’s authorities.
According to deputies, Toney was seen on camera entering the jail and dashing away after unlocking a gate. After seeing the escape, a local guy informed the police.
According to court documents, Toney entered a guilty plea to two charges of first-degree murder last month. He was charged with shooting two individuals to death and wounded a third at an apartment building in northeastern Albuquerque in January 2021.
After being detained in Colorado for almost ten months, Toney was extradited to New Mexico.
According to county prosecutors, Toney will be sentenced on June 26 and might spend up to 51 years behind bars.
He is currently being prosecuted on an extra count of trying to break out of jail.
Toney’s attorney is not listed in the most recent online court records, and a call to the county public defender’s office on Sunday didn’t get a response right away.
