CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A community activist in west Charlotte is arguing INLIVIAN, Charlotte’s housing authority, needs to increase security after a deadly shooting on Sunday afternoon.
Eighteen-year-old Campbell Jordyn was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the middle of the Little Rock Apartment complex, near the intersection of West Boulevard and Billy Graham Parkway.
Bart Noonan with the West Blvd Ministry spoke with Queen City News on Monday, frustrated with violence that seems to plague the development.
“Middle of the day, right next to the playground, an automatic weapon is unloaded, and its only by the grace of God that one person was shot,” he said.
Noonan’s ministry includes several Little Rock residents. He said he is frustrated, convinced that INLIVIAN is not doing enough to protect tenants.
“We’ve had multiple shootings over there in the past couple of years, we’ve had multiple conversations with INLIVIAN, about the violence over there,” Noonan said.
INLIVIAN spokesperson Cheron Porter acknowledged what happened on Sunday was horrific.
“Our first and foremost concerns are for the safety and well-being of our residents, we are highly frustrated, and we don’t like what happened any more than anyone else,” he said.
But Porter also pointed out that neither the shooter nor the victim were Little Rock tenants. She said they have made multiple changes since taking ownership in 2022, that they focused specifically on engaging with residents.
“We implemented on-site security, we have cameras, we have an increased relationship with CMPD,” said Porter.
Noonan contends Sunday’s homicide is proof not enough is being done.
“If yesterday, they had security driving around that property, mid-day, I don’t think a young man would have stepped out of his car, taken an automatic weapon with an extended clip and unloaded in the middle of the day.”
Porter pushed back on that prediction, arguing that only so much can be done to ensure safety.
“I don’t think there’s anything that anyone can do to stop someone who has ill intent, I don’t care where you are in these United States,” she said.
According to INLIVIAN, the property’s surveillance system helped police identify a suspect.
