Following the discovery of sufficient evidence, a grand jury in Henry County has decided to legally prosecute a husband and wife who are accused of being responsible for the death of their son with special needs and then placing his body in a freezer. During the beginning of the month of May, Micheal Shane Halstead, who is 44 years old, and his wife, Karen Tysinger Halstead, who is 43 years old, were indicted on counts of careless manslaughter and killing a corpse.
In the charges, it is stated that the Halsteads were responsible for the death of their son, Logan Michael Halstead, who was 19 years old and had special needs. According to the indictments, after Logan had passed away, his parents stuffed his body into a freezer after wrapping it in plastic bags and blankets. In the latter part of October 2023, the freezer and the body were discovered in the backyard of a Headland trailer that had been legally rented by the Halsteads.
In an interview with WDHN, Sheriff Eric Blankenship stated that it is suspected that the body of Logan Halstead was placed in the freezer in late August 2023. This occurred not too long before the Halstead family relocated from Headland to Jack, Alabama. The body was discovered by the new tenants when they were cleaning the property.
Logan was diagnosed with Spinal Bifida, according to the investigators. Court documents state that an additional investigation revealed sufficient evidence to charge the Halsteads with careless manslaughter. Initially, the Halsteads were only charged with mistreatment of a corpse; however, the charges were upgraded to include all charges. Both Karen and Micheal Halstead are scheduled to appear in court on the 12th of July and the 17th of June, respectively. At the Henry County Jail, they had both formed a friendship with one another.
